Self-Reliant

For when they leave me, as they always do. Friends. Family. Loved ones. Even the dog. Taking away the love and the flame that keeps me warm, on cold dark nights just like this one, I still can win. For I already know how to create my own light deep from within.

 When the lights go out,
there is a darkness inside.
She smiles at me with blood and bile in her teeth.
She doesn’t know that I’ve defeated her
many times before.

Cut me down, cut me down, cut me down!
She claws at me from behind my insecure door.
She drags at me underneath my own skin.
The outer shell of a human being
that she thinks is hers.

I cut her down, cut her down, cut her down!
Knowing that the fire I create from inside
keeps my insides in.
For when they leave me, as they always do.
Friends. Family. Loved ones. Even the dog.
Taking away the love and the flame that keeps me warm,
on cold dark nights just like this one,
I still can win.
For I already know how to create my own light
deep from within.
